About Dr.Teotico-Lee

How I Work

Clients often ask me, “So, how does therapy work?”

I often answer this question with a metaphor that goes something like this:

Imagine a cave and in that cave is something you really want, a treasure of some kind. But, between you and this treasure is this cave of unknowns. This cave of unknowns are filled with past experiences, items, and people. We don’t know which will be important in our journey but they need to be approached to find out. This process can be scary and nerve-wracking to do on your own. My job is to walk with you in the journey, hold the flashlight, point at things that might be important, and with your collaboration, explore that facet of your life with you. Together, we’ll process this aspect to help us along our journey to growth and healing aka the treasure.

I am a firm believer that although I have expertise in psychology, you are the expert of your own life. Everyone has a unique journey and have different outcomes they would like to see in their life. Therapy is the place to explore what is important to you, how you want to see your life shake out, and what steps to take to move you towards the life you want to live. We are partners in your journey. At times, I might challenge you to help move you along but ultimately, we decide together on the next steps to achieve your dreams.
